Year Two Curriculum Newsletter
Autumn Term 2016
In English this term will be focussing on main topics; instruction writing, character descriptions and story writing using familiar traditional tales. During English lessons the children will have time to plan, write and evaluate their work, developing their ability to improve their work. In our English lessons your child will also begin to develop their reading comprehension skills answering questions about the text they have read. Please look in your child’s home reading book for support with questions to ask whilst listening to them read.
In phonics this term we shall be recapping on phonemes (sounds) the children have previously learnt. They will continue to develop their segmenting and blending of sounds to support the reading of unknown words. The children will continue to learn diagraphs such as ou, ow and ee.
This term we shall be reading, writing, partitioning, counting and ordering numbers to at least 50. The children will be consolidating all existing knowledge of addition and subtraction. Your child will also begin to recall and use multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10 times table. We shall also be developing mental arithmetic skills and learning to use number facts to aid calculating. We shall be learning to read the time on an analogue clock; name and describe shapes and to solve problems involving money, shape, measures and time. The children will begin to develop their skills of using their knowledge in different ways, through different puzzles, problems and questions.
We shall be covering the unit ‘Animals, including humans’. This will include learning that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults, finding out about and describing the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival, describing the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene. We shall then move on to ‘uses of everyday materials’. This will include learning about identifying and comparing the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and paper for particular uses and finding out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

In this term we study Luton and we will be using maps and photos to gather information. The children will plan a route around the local area and will follow this route on foot. The children will also look at how to improve our local area.
In RE lessons your child will listen to, discuss and recall stories from different religions. They will learn about different special books. During the second half term we will be learning about what Christians believe.
Art and Design
This terms topic is ‘being an artist’. The children will look at how to draw a portrait of their peers using different medium. We will also be looking at different pieces of art by Andy Warhol and begin to develop the use of colours and the colour wheel.
Design and Technology
Design and technology will be linked closely with Computing and science. The children will research, design and make a sandwich to their own specification. The children will also learn about health and hygiene in the kitchen.
During PE this term the children will begin to develop and extend their body awareness, enhance their throwing and catching skills, using equipment of different shapes and size then incorporate these skills into a team game. In the second half term we will be covering outdoor and adventurous activities where we will follow maps, find hidden objects and learn to have fun outdoors with the equipment we have available.
We shall be exploring pitch, identifying pitch, what is meant by pitch and how to use their voices to change pitch. The children will sort instruments into different categories, explore tuned instruments and sing a melody. In the second half of the term the children will learn songs and decide on percussion accompaniment for the Christmas play.
Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education
In this term we will write our own class rules, play circle games and identify people who are special to us. We will also cover hand washing, bullying, staying safe on bonfire night and how to save energy.
